PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
Heavenly Father,
you renew the Church
in every age by
raising up religious women
to bear witness to you.
Fill the hearts of young women
with a spirit of courage and love,
and enliven in them
an awareness of their vocation
that they may hear your call.
May those you have
chosen to serve you
provide by their way of life
a convincing sign
of your kingdom
for the Church
and the whole world.
One life to live….so many choices! How do we find the answer to the questions of what and where God wants us to be?
While the choices have become more numerous today, the real problem is being attentive to the voice of God in our lives. Listening to God and the stirring of our hearts is called discernment. It is taking all the pieces of our lives and finding the best fit for them.
There is no one type of person who is called to the vocation of a Carmelite nun. Each person’s story is unique however, there is one common factor…each woman has been seized by God. Seized is a strong word, yet it depicts what happens when we have been grasped by Christ. God freely gives this gift and, in order to be true to ourselves, the only response we can give is the total gift of ourselves.
We are here because no other life would make sense for us. We are seized and our love is transformed into service for the Kingdom of God. Every Carmelite resonates with the words of our spiritual father, the prophet Elijah, when he declares: With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of Hosts!”
What about you? God’s call to each of us is unique. We each have a path to walk and we will arrive at different crossroads during our journey. We can stand there looking at the signposts, unable to take the next step, or we can take a risk, pick a direction and move! Discernment is not complete without taking action!
